It releases a small amount of progestin to prevent pregnancy for 3 - 8 years. Once it's in, there's nothing to remember and typically removal is simple when you're ready. Less than 1 out of 100 can get pregnant using this method.

Ask about pain control when scheduling so you'll know what's available and what to expect. Please come to the visit with your questions and a summary of your medical history, including the date of your last period. This method will require a physical exam. Please keep in mind that clinic registration and visit processes vary by location.

❌ Removal
A provider can take it out anytime and for any reason in just a few minutes. Fertility can return quickly usually within the first few months.
